The dictionary says that the word PARADISE comes from the Greek PARADEISOS, which means literally "enclosed park", but the roots of this idea come from ancient Persia. Paradise is a place that is cherished, guarded, and hidden. It lies deep within the mind, golden in colour like foggy, elegant memories. But I imagine, what if the wall enclosing this lovely park disappeared, suddenly? And what if the sealed fountain spouted surprisingly and incessantly? Paradise would experience unprecedented chaos, as if washed away in a massive flood? Wouldn't the surrounding fence be a bastille of confinement? Wouldn't the seal excluding the outside world become a chain to curb those inside? How far is the distance between a bright flower garden and a dark night in a cell?
To see this, initially I closed my the eyes of my heart, then walked around various old images: seals from the ancient Orient; textiles in SYO-SO-IN(Nara, Japan) that came from Partia, which was destroyed by Sessanian Persia; icons of Hellenistic mystery religions; emblems of introspective protestantism or baroque alchemy; clownish and grotesque little people illuminated on the edge of medieval manuscripts; eastern and western pattern of flowers and plants which are growing in wild profusion. It is hard to reach the end of this journey of insight, but I encountered some compelling images. I begin with them, painting them around the old fountain in my enclosed garden.

パラダイス(paradise)の語源は、ギリシア語paradeisos（＝閉じられた庭）で、この語はさらに遠くペルシアまで遡る。慈しみ、守られ、秘められた処に、「楽園」がある。朧気でたおやかな良き記憶のように、黄金色に着色され、胸の裡に潜んでいる。だが、大事に閉じていたはずの庭の、堅固な外壁が忽然と消滅し、封じていたはずの泉が、意外にも滾々と湧きだしたならどうだろう。「楽園」は大洪水に押し流される勢いで、未曾有の混沌に見舞われるだろうか。もしくは、防護の柵が幽閉の砦となり、節制の封印が拘束の轡（くつわ）となることはないのか。鮮やかな花園は独房の闇夜と、どれだけ隔てられているのだろう。

この光景を見るために、まずは私自身の心の眼を閉じて、数々の古い図像を逍遙してみた。古代オリエントの印章、ササン朝ペルシアに滅ぼされた国から正倉院まで伝わった装飾図案、ヘレニズム世界の秘儀宗教が遺した聖像、内観的なプロテスタンティズムやバロックの錬金術が遺したエンブレム、中世装飾写本のマージンに描かれた滑稽でグロテスクな小人達、狂おしいほどに生い立つ東西植物文様・・・この内見の旅は、そう簡単に終わるものではないのだが、いくつか、惹かれるイメージに出会った。まずは、それらを、私の閉じられた庭の、古い泉の廻りに描いてみる。
